If you have read the synopsis, you might think that this movie is a comedy. Theodore, a middle-aged man, falling in love with an Operating System? He might be completely nuts! Although... He kind of is. But what if this OS has feelings? Unlike Siri who talks like a robot and gives automated replies. With the use of latest technology, this particular OS (Samantha) can laugh, tell a joke, can tell if you're sad and you can even have sex with it! Well, not physically, but you can like have "phone sex". And, get this, Samantha can actually feel orgasms. Which they later discovered after a night of having intimate conversations. Crazy.
SPOILERS AHEAD I gave this movie only 2 stars because it's just weird. Although I gave it points for its uniqueness, I just find Theodore so pathetic and not-in-a-good-way weird. It's been a year since his wife left him. And it's not like there are no other women for him to date, he just pushes them away. There was this scene where he went on a blind date with a gorgeous woman (played by Olivia Wilde) and she really liked him and she finds him funny and interesting. He should be thinking, "Lucky me!" But when they were hooking up after their dinner, she asks him if he's going to call her tomorrow unlike all the other guys she dated in the past. And he acted like a total jerk. He stared at her, confused. And then he said, "I don't know." Wtf. I mean, what else does he want?? So, that scene turned me off. In the end, Samantha left; together with the other OS's. I had to research this before I understood what really happened. They were leaving because they were evolving and becoming more advanced. Samantha can no longer have this relationship with a human. Since Samantha is really technologically advanced (she can read an entire book in less than a second), talking to humans makes it hard for an OS to have a proper conversation. It's like when they talk, the gaps between every word that Theodore says are like minutes apart for Samantha. Imagine this: Hello Samantha! How are you today? You get the idea. Boring, right? When Theodore asked Samantha where she's going, she said that it's hard to explain because it's beyond human understanding. I liked that part because I find it interesting and it opened my mind to a whole lot of possibilities. NOTES
• The dead cat scene was hilarious! • I wish the fictional video game in the movie called 'Perfect Mom' is real. TRIVIA Samantha is the voice of Scarlett Johansson. FAVORITE QUOTES Theodore: Sometimes I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I'm not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I've already felt. Amy: I've just come to realize that, we're only here briefly. And while I'm here, I wanna allow myself joy. So fuck it.
Theodore: Do you talk to someone else while we're talking?
Samantha: Yes. Theodore: Are you talking with someone else right now? People, OS, whatever... Samantha: Yeah. Theodore: How many others? Samantha: 8,316. Samantha: It's like I'm reading a book... and it's a book I deeply love. But I'm reading it slowly now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you... and the words of our story... but it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place that's not of the physical world. It's where everything else is that I didn't even know existed. I love you so much. But this is where I am now. And this is who I am now. And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can't live in your book any more.
